Sioux Narrows on Lake of the Woods

Located in the heart of Lake of the Woods, Sioux Narrows is a resort community offering some of northwestern Ontario's finest resorts and lodges. Getting to Sioux Narrows is half the fun - the drive up or down Highway 71 along the eastern shoreline of the Lake of the Woods is beautiful.

Action at the Narrows
In the mid-18th century, an Ojibwa-Cree alliance is said to have defeated an invading party of Sioux at a narrows here on the lake. Sioux Narrows is named in recognition of that event. You can overlook the site of the battle when you cross this community's most unique feature, the longest single-span wooden bridge in North America. The bridge was built in the mid-1930s and spans 210 feet across the narrows.

Sioux Narrows Provincial Park is located just outside of town on one of the thousands of islands on Lake of the Woods. The forest in the area supports abundant wildlife and birds in stands of aspen, maple, white pine, birch and balsam. The forest also supports a variety of edible plants including hazlenuts, blueberries, raspberries, starwberries and sand cherries.

On occassion you will see white-tail deer, moose and black bear. Bald eagles, ospreys and comorants breed on nearby islands and the beach and shoreline are great places to spot great blue herons, loon, white pelicans and sapsuckers. Nature abounds!

The Sioux Narrows area has a long history of aboriginal peoples whose red ochre rock paintings depict spirits, animals, and other unidentifiable shapes.
